Brother: Clifford OUNSLEY (1894-1918)
Brother: Louis OUNSLEY (1900-1926)
Half-Brother: Bernard Horatio GREENWOOD (1917-1944)
We were intrigued by the relationship between Clifford, Frances and Louis Ounsley and Bernard H. Greenwood. Why was Bernard memorialised on the same gravestone as the Ounsley siblings? After much delving by our research team, it seems that Bernard may have been the half-brother of the siblings.
Clifford, Frances and Louis Ounsley were the children of George Ounsley and Annie Elizabeth Lockwood. In 1901 the family were living at 2 Percy Street, Goole and George was working as a Railway Porter.
By 1911 Annie Ounsley was living at 42 Strickland Street, Hull. According to the census she had been married for 20 years. However, she was living in the household of Frank Fielden Greenwood, as his housekeeper. Also in the household were her sons, Clifford and Louis Ounsley. George Ounsley was still living in Goole, boarding in the household of the Porter family at 44 Third Avenue. With him was his daughter, Francis Marion who, according to the census, was 'feeble minded from birth'. This sad description may explain the inscription, 'Peace after Pain' on the gravestone.
Bernard Horatio Greenwood was born on 7th January 1917 in Hull. His mother's maiden name was Lockwood. According to his war record, his father was Frank Fielden Greenwood.
It would seem that Annie and Frank never married as, in 1939, Annie is living at 68 Regent Street, Hull, still under the surname of Ounsley. Also in the household is Bernard Greenwood - her son!
Further proof may be found in Bernard's probate record of 1944, which shows his last address as 68 Regent Street, Hull.
