John ALLAN
(1811-1843)
(1811-1843)
The following report of the sad death of John Allan appeared in The Witness (Edinburgh), on Wednesday 5th July 1843:
GOOLE MELANCHOLY DEATH
An inquest was held at the Lowther Hotel, Friday week, before Mr Pearson, coroner, over the body of Captain John Allan, of the schooner Pilot, of Newburgh, who was drowned early on that morning, under the following circumstances. It appeared from the evidence that he had been on shore the previous evening, and came on board about midnight, along with another captain; and after taking a glass of liquor each, the deceased accompanied the other captain, who was intoxicated, to his own vessel, and on returning, had, by some means unknown, fallen into the dock. He was not missed till the mate got up in the morning at six o'clock, and not finding him in his bed, suspicion was exited. Having procured drags, his body was shortly found close to the ship. He has left a wife and four children to lament his untimely end. Verdict: "Accidentally drowned."
