JEFFERSON, David

At the time of the survey of Hook, in 1768, the township belonged to William Sotheron, Reverend William Godfrey and David Jefferson, Esquire. Neither William Sotheron nor Rev. Godfrey lived in the village - although Rev. Godfrey was buried in the churchyard. However David Jefferson does appear to have lived there and, for all his status and wealth, he seems to have led a somewhat interesting life!
David Jefferson was the nephew of Joshua Jefferson, the founder of The Jefferson Trust, which still runs in the village, providing funds for transport to hospital, for educational needs and for those preparing to enter a trade or profession as an apprentice or student.
Hannah Bottomley was baptised at Methley, Yorkshire, on 16th Mary 1737. She was the illegitimate daughter of spinster, Sarah Bottomley.
David Jefferson was buried in St Mary's churchyard on 7th October 1769. Sadly, no memorial stones now exists in the churchyard although, considering his status, it seems likely that there would have originally been one. In fact, his funeral would probably have been quite a grand affair.
In the Prerogative & Exchequer Courts Of York Probate Index, 1770, David Jefferson is listed as 'Gent of York'.
